Fibrenamics Brazil: Innovation unit strengthens ties between Londrina and Guimarães
As part of the institutional cooperation between Londrina and Guimarães, a delegation from the Municipality of Londrina carried out an official mission last week to the Portuguese city, with a highlight being the meeting at the Fibrenamics Institute, where discussions were advanced to establish Fibrenamics Brazil – a unit dedicated to research and technological innovation, with its headquarters planned for Londrina.
The Londrina delegation was composed of the Municipal Secretary of Planning, Budget and Technology, Marcos Rambalducci, and the Municipal Secretary of Government, Rodrigo Souza. The agenda included meetings with representatives from the Municipality of Guimarães and the University of Minho, as well as technical discussions on the next steps for making the initiative viable.
The Fibrenamics Brazil proposal stems from a memorandum of understanding already signed between the two cities, with the involvement of the State University of Londrina (UEL), the Federal University of Technology – Paraná (UTFPR), and the University of Minho. The unit’s mission will be to promote applied research, knowledge transfer, and the development of technological solutions based on advanced materials.
During the visit, a work plan was presented outlining the formal establishment of Fibrenamics Brazil, including the creation of an autonomous legal and administrative structure in compliance with Brazilian legislation. The proposal also includes the engagement of the private sector and encourages partnerships with companies interested in collaborating on the project.
According to Rodrigo Souza, the future establishment of Fibrenamics in Londrina "was only made possible due to the sister cities agreement between Londrina and Guimarães, where the institution is based. This partnership created the right environment, and now both the Brazilian and Portuguese sides will work together to turn what was once just an idea into reality. Fibrenamics in Londrina will make an important contribution to the development of the entire region and to the growth of technology-based industries."
The official launch of Fibrenamics Brazil is scheduled for April 2026, during ExpoLondrina, reinforcing the city’s position as an emerging hub for science, technology and innovation.
