Highlights of the Ignite Sessions 2024 – Defense & Protection
The 2024 edition of the Ignite Sessions, held on December 11th at the Quartel de Santo Ovídio in Porto, was entirely dedicated to defense and protection, with the highlight being the launch of the Fibrenamics Innovation HUB – Defense & Protection.
The event brought together leaders, experts, and leading organizations to discuss the latest trends and innovation opportunities in the defense and protection sector. The opening session featured an address by Raul Fangueiro, President of Fibrenamics, who shared the Institute's strategic vision for the future of defense and protection. The session was also marked by the perspectives of Vice-Dean Eugénio Campos Ferreira, who represented the Dean of the University of Minho, and of General João Boga Ribeiro, representing the Portuguese Army.
Ana Santos Pinto, Professor at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and former Secretary of State for Portuguese Defense, was the guest speaker for the inaugural panel titled “The Importance of the Defense Industry in the Current Geopolitical Context.” During her intervention, she presented a strategic analysis grounded in contemporary geopolitical and institutional dynamics. She also emphasized the need to foster greater dialogue and collaboration between the Industry and the Portuguese Innovation Ecosystem, highlighting the crucial role of this synergy in strengthening the national response capacity and resilience in the face of emerging global challenges.
Following this, Ramaswamy Nagarajan, Professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and co-director of HEROES (Harnessing Emerging Research Opportunities to Empower Soldiers), provided a comprehensive overview of “Emerging Research Opportunities for Soldier Empowerment” in Panel 2. During his intervention, he explored the trends and technological innovations that are transforming the operational capabilities of American soldiers, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary research collaboration for the development of advanced and integrated solutions in the defense domain.
The Igniters Carlos Mota, Project Manager at Fibrenamics, and João Bessa, R&D+i Manager at Fibrenamics, shared the latest trends and opportunities based on the scientific and technological development of advanced materials. During their presentations, they highlighted the impact of research and the development of innovative solutions in strengthening protection and defense standards, emphasizing the strategic relevance of innovation in driving the evolution of the sector.
The event's highlight was the launch of the Fibrenamics Innovation HUB – Defense & Protection, a strategic platform to drive innovation, collaboration, and technological leadership in the sector. Presented by Fernando Cunha, Executive Director of the Fibrenamics Association, this HUB aims to be a meeting point for technological innovations and collaborations, accelerating the modernization of the sector and strengthening defense and protection capabilities.
The launch of the HUB emphasizes the role of science and technology as a driving force for innovation. This is essential for strengthening Portuguese security and for a forward-looking vision of defense.
