Marta Teixeira’s PhD opens new perspectives in health-related biomaterials
Marta Teixeira, a researcher in Fibrenamics’ Fibres Unit, has completed her PhD in Textile Engineering with research focused on developing biomaterials for skin regeneration and chronic wound treatment. Her work brings together expertise in textile engineering, biomaterials and regenerative medicine, exploring new approaches to one of the persistent challenges in healthcare.
The public defence took place on 27 July at the University of Minho and resulted in unanimous approval. The jury recognised the quality, originality and multidisciplinary approach of the work, which bridges textile engineering, biomaterials and regenerative medicine.
A new therapeutic approach to chronic wound care
Entitled “Biodegradable, wet-spun fiber-hydrogel composites loaded with thymol and eugenol for skin regeneration: impact of the fiber architectural organization”, the thesis presents a new approach to developing materials for skin regeneration and the treatment of chronic wounds.
“My choice of this topic stemmed from my fascination with healthcare and biomaterial development. As chronic wound treatment continues to face several limitations, this project aimed to contribute to new therapeutic approaches for a condition that significantly affects the quality of life of many patients,” explains Marta Teixeira.
The research combined biodegradable fibres with hydrogels containing thymol and eugenol, two naturally derived compounds with properties that support skin recovery. This combination resulted in a structure inspired by the skin’s natural organisation, capable of gradually releasing these compounds, combating bacteria and hindering biofilm formation, while creating favourable conditions for cell regeneration.
The results highlight the potential of these materials for developing a new generation of more sustainable, bioactive solutions for hard-to-heal wounds, representing a significant contribution to the advancement of biomaterials for regenerative medicine and chronic wound care.
A journey of growth and new challenges
The completion of Marta Teixeira’s PhD marks an important milestone in her journey, reflecting several years of research, learning and growth.
“This journey allowed me to consolidate my knowledge, develop new technical skills and strengthen my critical thinking as a researcher. On a personal level, it enhanced my resilience and ability to overcome challenges, leaving me better prepared and more confident to take on new ones,” she says.
Supervised by Helena Felgueiras, from the University of Minho’s Centre for Textile Science and Technology, Joana Antunes, from Fibrenamics, and Carla Silva, from the University of Minho’s Centre of Biological Engineering, the research brought together multidisciplinary contributions that enabled Marta Teixeira to combine methods and perspectives from textile engineering, biology and healthcare.
This PhD represents the culmination of several years of research and opens a new chapter in Marta Teixeira’s scientific and professional journey. The knowledge and skills developed throughout this work also strengthen Fibrenamics’ expertise in biomaterials for healthcare and create new opportunities for research in this field.
