New Proof of Value episode highlights the PluriProtech project and Portuguese innovation in personal protection
Fibrenamics launches a new episode of the Proof of Value series, this time focusing on PluriProtech, an applied research project that is redefining standards in personal protection against biological, chemical and radiological threats. The episode puts the spotlight on the project and its real-world impact, showing how science can evolve into concrete solutions for critical safety challenges.
Presented by Joana Antunes, Project Manager of the Fibrous Structures Unit at Fibrenamics, the episode explores the development of an innovative protective suit designed to go beyond the traditional logic of passive blocking. PluriProtech introduces an active approach, capable not only of preventing the penetration of hazardous agents, but also of neutralising them.
From operational challenge to technological solution
The PluriProtech project emerged from the identification of clear limitations in conventional protective suits: excessive weight, low breathability and prolonged discomfort, all of which can compromise effectiveness and user safety in demanding scenarios.
To address this challenge, Fibrenamics and the University of Minho joined forces with Latino Group, Tintex Textiles, Sciencentris and the Portuguese Army, ensuring an integrated approach that combines research, industrial development and validation in real operational contexts.
The result is an intelligent, multi-layered textile system, based on functional fibres operating from the macro to the nanoscale. The structure incorporates pores smaller than 200 nanometres and active agents capable of degrading hazardous substances, while simultaneously ensuring mobility, breathability and comfort.
Validated performance and real-world impact
Laboratory and operational testing confirmed the high performance of PluriProtech, with results that demonstrate its robustness and reliability in critical environments:
-
Antibacterial activity above 99%
-
Certified antiviral efficacy
-
Protection against alpha and beta radiation and X-rays, in accordance with NATO standards
-
Official Army Tested certification
With direct applications in military, civil protection and industrial contexts, PluriProtech demonstrates how innovation developed in Portugal can achieve global impact, contributing to the safety of professionals operating in high-risk environments.
This new Proof of Value episode reinforces Fibrenamics’ commitment to transforming scientific knowledge into high-value technological solutions, bringing research closer to the real needs of society.
