The WoodProtech Project is promoted by VMR – Sociedade Têxtil Vital Marques Rodrigues Filhos SA, under operation code COMPETE2030-FEDER-01390400.
The WoodProtech project aims to develop multifunctional textile structures inspired by the structure and composition of wood, with the ability to actively purify indoor air quality (IAQ). Considering that individuals spend approximately 90% of their time indoors—often in environments more polluted than the outdoors—improving IAQ is essential for health and well-being, particularly in residential and healthcare settings.
Aligned with the principles of sustainability and the circular economy, the project employs biomimetic strategies and the reuse of natural residues, such as lignin, to create innovative and eco-friendly solutions that address both environmental and functional challenges in the home textiles, healthcare, and interior architecture sectors.
Summary:
The WoodProtech project aims to develop active and bio-inspired fibrous structures, based on wood, with properties that promote indoor air quality (IAQ), targeting the home textiles, healthcare, and interior architecture sectors.
To achieve this goal, a set of specific objectives has been defined, namely:
- Development of bio-inspired fibrous structures with particle retention or repellent properties, ensuring a barrier and/or filtration/retention effect against unspecific threats;
- Development of structures with active biological protection, incorporating antimicrobial, antifungal, and insect-repellent properties (against both flying and crawling insects);
- Development of structures offering protection against environmental threats, providing UV protection and flame retardancy.
In addition to these specific objectives, the project aims to integrate biomimetic and ecodesign strategies, as well as conduct life cycle assessments of materials, promoting environmentally responsible and sustainable solutions throughout the entire value chain.
This approach will enable Vital Marques Rodrigues to develop innovative, distinctive, and technologically advanced products with high added value, aligned with contemporary challenges related to health, comfort, and sustainability in indoor environments.
